Question about McCain and the surge?

Why does McCain continue to believe that the success of the surge presents a challenge to the historical position that the war in Iraq was a moral, strategic, and geopolitical calamity, was undertaken unilaterally, and unnecessarily and that as such, is an example of how not to enter or wage a war?
