The batteries in my toy just made a bubbly sizzeling sound?

I have a brand new vibrator that had brand new batteries in it, litterally both opened last night. It's one of those remote controlled ones with the wire attatching them. I was using it then heard the remote make an odd kind of hissing noise. I immediately removed the batteries. What could be wrong? I had only been using it for a minute.
